[00:00:06] Speaker A: Welcome to Bedtime Bible, a Westminster Kids prayer podcast. My name is Pastor Scott and I will lead you in a time to rest in God's presence in prayer, story and song as we prepare for sleep.
Dear God, we are here with you now.
Help our minds to grow calm, our hearts to open wide, and our bodies to find rest.
We know you are with us in this moment of stillness.
Amen.
I invite you to close your eyes, place your hands on your stomach and feel the breath moving into your body and then being slowly released.
Continue breathing slowly for a few moments.
Loving God, thank you for this day.
Some parts of our day were happy and some parts were hard.
In every moment you were with us.
Thank you for walking beside us when we laughed and when we cried, when we felt strong, when we felt tired.
We are grateful that nothing can separate us from your love.
Amen.
Our story today is about Jacob, and it's taken From Genesis, chapter 25, verses 19 to 28 and chapter 27, verses 1 through 40.
Esau and Jacob were twin brothers.
Very different twin brothers.
Esau grunted and flicked a flea from his hairy arm. He snorted and wiped his sweaty hands on his dirty robes.
He went outside the tent to hunt.
Jacob wrinkled his nose.
My brother is loud and stinky and hairy, he thought.
I would rather stay inside.
Jacob washed his smooth hands and went to help cook with his mother, Rebekah.
Jacob, rebekah said. Come here.
She told him her plan.
Your father is going to give Esau his one blessing.
I want Isaac to bless you instead.
Rebecca peeked into Isaac's room. He was snoring softly.
Isaac was very old. He couldn't see well.
Rebekah decided to trick Isaac into giving Jacob Esau's blessing.
Jacob would pretend to be Esau.
Jacob plugged his nose. Rebecca dressed him in one of Esau's stinky robes.
Jacob closed his eyes.
Rebecca wrapped his arms in animal furs.
Go to your father, she said.
Tell him you are Esau.
Jacob stood by his father's bed.
Father, he said. Bless me.
Come closer, isaac croaked.
Jacob stepped closer.
Isaac sniffed.
It smelled like Esau.
He touched the furs on Jacob's arms.
It felt like Esau.
He tried to see it. It must be Esau.
Isaac blessed Jacob with a full life of food and health and power.
Esau was furious with Jacob for stealing his blessing.
Jacob ran away in fear.
Let us pray.
Dear God, we try to live loving, faithful lives.
But we're not perfect.
And sometimes we make bad decisions. Like Jacob did, trying to trick his dad and leave his brother from getting the blessing.
Help us to see what's right and to act on it.
We ask this in your holy name.
Amen.
